I know we have been in a recession for awhile now, but I didn't notice luxury goods scaling back until now. The spring and summer collections that are hitting stores for the upcoming season consist of the lower and mid level luxury brands like Marc by Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch, and Kate Spade. While stores like Net a Porter usually stock up with Lanvin, Judith Leiber, Marc Jacobs, Balmain and Chloe, this Spring the selection is scant to say the least. The majority of the handbags are less than $1,000. Yikes! Chanel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Hermes, I'm sure, are feeling the pinch.

This week at Marc Jacobs fantastic signature collection debut, there were lots of bright colors and lively prints. The Marc by Marc Jacobs is always a bit over the top and not for everyone, but he does have a very trendy, very hip, and usually young, clientele. I like the bright cross body bags, but the orange studded shoulder bags are more my speed. This collection will go over very well with his M by MJ followers and for those of us who are Marc Jacobs, the designer, fans, this may be the only collection that offers anything we would want. Hopefully the Louis Vuitton collection will be better than the Marc Jacobs disaster from last week.

I must say this is the cutest Marc by Marc Jacobs handbag I have ever seen. I'm thrilled it's in his less expensive line, he usually puts a detailed bag like this in the Marc Jacobs line. Lucky us. It's a bow-embellished purple velvet pouchette and the strap is a gold-tone chain with silver-tone bow embellishments. The Marc by Marc Jacobs plaque is on the front, but a bit discreet. And it's affordable! $250 at Net a Porter.

I love that Marc Jacobs has a less expensive line so that his genius can be afforded by a greater lot. This bag is from his Marc by Marc Jacobs and it's a pretty strait forward design, a roomy hobo for everyday use. It's black leather and has a shoulder strap and a longer, removable cross body strap (shown on the model).
